About Island Solar Cell
At Island Solar Cell we focus on creating solar power solutions for our community. I am Russell Smith and have been an electrician for over 30 years. I have been designing and installing solar power systems since 1996.
My specialty is designing and installing whole-house Photovoltaic (PV) cell systems with battery back-up inverter with incorporated generator systems. Currently I live and work on Pine Island, surrounding barrier islands, and neighboring cities in southwest Florida.
Living Off the Grid
I installed and maintain six solar electric systems on Cayo Costa, an island off the southwest coast of Florida. All of these systems survived the 2004 hurricane season and are still in operation today. Most of these homes have no power from an outside source.
They generate all the power that they need from solar with a generator for back-up power. The majority of the homes’ solar power systems produce 20-30 kW per day. This provides all the power that they need with the exception of heat and air conditioning.
My own home has a solar electric grid-tie system connected to LCEC in St. James City which generates 18 kW a day…and because I have a solar water heater and propane for cooking and clothes drying, this system provides half of my power needs. My electric bill for a 4,800 square-foot home is about $85 a month.
